Snow Affairs
In Vienna, in the years prior to the First World War, Alfons Walde, son of the headmaster of Kitzbühel elementary school Franz Walde, grappled with works by Gustav Klimt and his friend, EgonSchiele. Upon his return home from duties on the front-line in the First World War to the sophisticated Kitzbühel of the 1920s and 1930s, he developed his largely independent style, though it was indeed committed to Expressionism and New Objectivity. His particularly esteemed snow landscape scenes (amongst them “Almen im Schnee”) and winter sport pictures (e. g. “Aufstieg der Skifahrer”) fundamentally contributed to the image of Tirol as a mountain area for winter sport.
